How to Turn iPhone Silent Mode Without Switch

Since its initial release, the iPhone has always used physical buttons to activate and deactivate silent mode. Even until the iPhone 12 era now, the small physical button located above the volume button is still irreplaceable.

Indeed, with this button, you can end up in silent mode easily and quickly. However, what will you do if the button is broken? Or when you’re in a position that doesn’t allow you to press a button? Well, therefore today we will discuss the topic of how to turn iPhone silent mode without any switch needed.

Indeed, until now Apple has not provided an alternative option that can replace the function of this button one hundred percent. The methods that I will mention below may not be equivalent to using the Silent Mode switch button on the iPhone, both in terms of practicality and effectiveness. However, still better than nothing at all, don’t you think so?

Using Back Tap (iOS 14)

If your iPhone device is equipped with the iOS 14 operating system or above, then you can use the back tap feature as an alternative to turning iPhone silent mode without any switch. As the name suggests, this is a feature that can be activated or triggered by double or triple tapping on the back of the iPhone, depending on preference.

The steps you must follow are:

  • Go to the “Setting” app, and then go to “Accessibility”.
  • From there, select “Touch”.
  • Scroll down to the bottom and select “Back Tap”.
  • After that, you can select “Double Tap” or “Tripple Tap” depending on your preference, and then select “Mute”.

Now, just by tapping the back of your iPhone, you can enable or disable Silent Mode on your iPhone easily. Take note, this method only works if your iPhone is in the unlocked position.

Using AssistiveTouch (iOS 13 & 14)

Do you remember this feature? Yep, AssistiveTouch is a versatile feature that can make things easier for iPhone users. AssistiveTouch itself has many practical functions that can be activated with just one tap. And sure, one of them is enabling or disabling Silent Mode on your iPhone without a switch button.

Here’s how you do it:

  • Go to the “Setting” app, and then go to “Accessibility”.
  • Under the Physical and Motor section, tap “Touch”.
  • You can now tap AssistiveTouch at the top and turn on the toggle for “AssistiveTouch”.
  • You will now see a floating button on your screen that you can drag to the edges.
  • Tap the virtual onscreen button to open the AssistiveTouch menu, and just tap the “Mute” option to put your iPhone on silent mode or “Unmute” to disable the silent mode.
